]]>Many travelers to Macchu Pichu start their trip in Cusco, but there’s more to the ancient city than just a staging site for a hike up the Inca Trail. No traveler to Peru should miss spending time taking in the sights (and maybe doing a little shopping) in Cusco. If you are planning a trip to Cusco, know that it is is the best place to stock up on supplies like snacks and water – things are pricier in Aguas Calientes at the base of the mountains.
Don’t be alarmed if you find the colonial city of Cusco literally breathtaking – at 11,000 feet above sea level, those who aren’t used to the altitude will need time to acclimatize. Many trail guides will require you to spend some time here before your hike – the city itself is actually higher than Macchu Pichu.
Begin your trip to Cusco in the heart of the city, the Centro Historico De Cusco. Dominated by a forbidding Spanish Mission style cathedral, the central plaza is perfect for a walking tour of Cusco’s history. Surrounded by the cathedral on one side and another church on the other the aesthetics are stunning. There are two levels of provincial two-story shops and homes, making the square is a hub to many great parts of Cusco: local outdoor markets, attending a native food cooking class, watching chocolate being made or preparing for your Inca Trek.
The ruins of Sacsayhuaman, located just outside of the city, are easily accessible on foot. The Inca knowledge of architecture and building support is astonishingly displayed here. This is an ideal place to view the entire town of Cusco from above. There are cabs to and from the ruins, so if you have mobility issues or are just tired, you can still visit the site.
Whether you’re looking for authentic souvenirs from your trip to Cusco or just a snack, shop where the locals do: the Mercado Central de San Pedro. The fresh juices will nourish and refresh you, and the prices for handmade llama wool sweaters are some of the best you’ll find.
To learn more about planning a trip to Cusco, get in touch with Andean Land Expeditions. Andean Land Expeditions is a Peruvian travel operator with a main office in located in Cusco, Peru, and we are the top-rated tour operators of the Inca Trail.

Cusco, Cuzco, or Qosqo —“navel” in Quechua— was founded by the Incas, who established it as the capital and the geographical, political, strategic, and military center of their territory. Cusco has impressive landscapes characterized by a blue sky and white clouds accompanied by imposing mountains. In addition, it’s Inca and colonial architectural heritage make this place unique in the world.
On the first day of this tour, we will be able to observe Inca constructions such as the Koricancha and the Palace of Inca Roca, along with Andean baroque-style colonial constructions such as the cathedral and the Church of the Company.
Ten minutes from the city rise the gigantic walls of the Sacsayhuamán fortress, and a few kilometers further away are the archaeological sites of Qenko, Pukapukara and Tambomachay, built entirely of stone.
On the second day of our trip, we will visit the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a magical place adorned with numerous rivers that flow through streams and small valleys. There are several archaeological monuments and indigenous towns in the Sacred Valley, including Pisaq with its artisan market, Ollantaytambo, and finally the city of Chinchero. This valley was revered by the Incas due to its special geographical, climatic, and energetic qualities. It was one of the main production centers of the empire due to its fertile soil. Today, the Sacred Valley of the Incas is home to the production of the best corn in Peru.
Day 03 of our trip will take us to the majestic “Machu Picchu”. This wonder of the world is known for its imposing architecture, as well as for its incomparable location.

The main attraction of Pisac is the traditional indigenous market, where we will find a great variety of typical objects of the region, made of cloth or ceramics. We will also admire the typical costumes of the region, quite colorful and worn by the local people. Additionally, we will be able to visit the old colonial church of Pisac, where masses are still celebrated in Quechua on Sundays, attended by local residents and “varayocs” (local authorities from different cities). We will end our visit to Pisac with a look at the interesting irrigation system for the fields and the fabulous astronomical observatory from Inca times.
Urubamba: To go to Urubamba we will pass through the towns of Coya, Lamay, Calca, and Yucay, observing beautiful flora and fauna during a 45-minute tour. At the end of the trip, we will arrive at the city of Urubamba, located in the heart of the Sacred Valley, in the middle of a fairly comfortable and fertile area that constitutes an important pre-Hispanic agricultural center. We will take advantage of this pleasant atmosphere to have lunch in a cozy typical restaurant.
Ollantaytambo: In the afternoon we will go to the Ollantaytambo region, also known as “Valle del Tambo”. This is the only “living” Inca city, that is, the only one inhabited, and it extends along the Vilcanota River, reaching Machu Picchu. We will visit the famous fortress of Ollantaytambo, which stands out in the valley, where we will see some of the most imposing constructions of the Inca empire.
Chinchero: On the way back to the city of Cusco we will stop to visit Chinchero and its small chapel. This town, like Pisac, is known for its traditional market; however, the Chinchero market, although smaller, is richer in tradition and offers a greater variety of textiles. Finally, we will return to Cusco, where we will leave you in your accommodations.
We will start this tour very early, picking you up from the hotel around 4:00 am. to go by tourist transport to the train station and make a captivating trip of three and a half hours to Machu Picchu, also known as “The Lost City of the Incas”.
We will arrive at the “Machu Picchu train station, and immediately we will get on a bus that will take us on a 30-minute trip, ascending a zigzag path, where we will finally arrive. to the incredible Machu Picchu. The excursion includes a guided tour of approximately 2 hours in the citadel. During the visit, we will visit the most important sites around Machu Picchu. After a guided tour, we will go back to Aguas Calientes town in order to have lunch before boarding our return train. In the afternoon, at approximately 6:30 p.m. We will board our train towards the town of Ollantaytambo, where a bus will wait for us to return to the City of Cusco, which we will arrive at approximately. 10:00 p.m.
Breakfast at the hotel. – Departure at 08:40 a.m. by bus to Maras and Moray. – Visit the archaeological center of Maras, the salt flats of Maras, and Moray. – Return to Cusco approx. 2:00 p.m. – Lunch and free afternoon. Does not include: Lunch and dinner.
Moray, at first glance, seems like a kind of amphitheater made up of several circular platforms, but in reality, it is an agricultural experimentation center from the Inca era. Next to Moray we have the impressive salt exploitation complex. From Maras, we will visit the salt mines along a bridle path where there are animals carrying sacks of salt.
Moray Ruins: Discovered in 1930, they are located at 3,450 meters above sea level, and in them, we can find testimonies of pre-Hispanic settlements, including Inca vestiges. The ruins of Moray are made up of circular platforms that correspond to agricultural embankments with a complex irrigation system, which reached the three sectors that make up the complex. The Quechuas call these areas “muyus” and in its largest hole, the depth is 150 meters. The average height of the platforms is 1.80 m. Moray was built during the heyday of the Inca empire and was then a center for agricultural experimentation, on whose platforms several microclimates were obtained.
Town of Maras: This friendly town still retains much of its colonial architectural beauty. Extraordinary portals with fine stone carvings can be seen, as well as structures with low-relief sculptures.
Maras Salt Flats: It is a small brine spring worked with very elementary means by a fraction of the population of “Maras” and “Pichingoto”. These archaeological remains reveal that this resource was already known and used in pre-Hispanic times, and may have been one of the many sources of salt supply for the Inca population. The current technique for extracting salt is very similar to that used for nine hundred years or more. During all these centuries this technology has been preserved, which consists of a true work of hydraulic engineering, but in miniature, since the pools have relatively small dimensions, built as platforms on one of the slopes of the ravine. The extraction is seasonal, it is only carried out in the dry season from May to November or early December. The property of the pools is given mainly by inheritance.
At the appropriate time, we will have our last transfer to the Cusco airpor

The airport in Cusco currently is only for domestic flights, so all international travelers by plane must disembark in Lima and go through Customs. Even if your flight to Cusco is the same day by the same airline carrier, you must grab your bags in Lima and then check them back in.
The best way to get to Cusco is by air and there are several options in airlines. LAN tends to be the most expensive, but has the most options and flights. Expect delays or flight cancellations. Due to the high altitude of Cusco, it tends to be difficult to land and any acclimate weather will stop air traffic. Bus travel is always available and while the trip can be long, especially from Lima, the buses in Peru are very well maintained and comfortable. This option is strongly encouraged if coming from a city closer to Cusco, like Puno. Lima buses will take about 20 hours to arrive.
Even though this is an overnight tour by train, your luggage allowance is still limited due to restrictions on the train. All bags brought to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu) need to be carry on size. Any extra luggage you have with you can be left safely in Cusco at either your hotel or with us at the Andean Land Expeditions deposit while you trek. We will grab from you the morning of your tour and return once you are back in Cusco. Make sure your bags have some kind of identification on them so they are easy to locate
As soon as people book their trip to Peru, specifically Cusco, they start wondering about altitude sickness. The air at high altitudes contains less oxygen than at sea level and forces your body to work harder to get the oxygen it needs. Over several days at high altitude, your body adjusts to the lower amount of oxygen in the air.
With altitude sickness, you may first feel like you have the flu or a hangover. You may have a headache, tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, trouble sleeping, trouble breathing during exercise. If any of these effects become severe, please contact our office and we will help you get to a doctor.
Most of the time, these symptoms will be mild. We always recommend easing into activity slowly, allowing your body to adjust. Drink plenty of fluids such as water or coca tea. Coca tea has been used since ancient times to help prevent altitude sickness. Leaves from the coca plant contain alkaloids which helps bring oxygen into your blood, helping your body avoid the effects of altitude sickness. Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol and coffee. They will cause you to urinate more often and become dehydrated. Avoid smoking. Smoking makes it more difficult for your body to get oxygen. Avoid sleeping pills. They may cause shallow breathing at night, making it more difficult for your body to absorb oxygen while you sleep.
Your healthcare provider may prescribe medicines, such as acetazolamide and dexamethasone, to help prevent altitude sickness. Start the medicine two days before you get to a high altitude. Continue to take it while you are at high altitude.
Of course weather is unpredictable. Typically the dry season in Cusco is from April through October, but this does not stop rain from falling in June or the sun from coming out in December – just be prepared. No matter what month you are doing the trek, please make sure that you have rain gear that includes a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho and waterproof gloves.
Also prepare for four seasons. Many of the treks through the Andes involve many micro-climates and you will need to be prepared for all seasons. Layers are always key as they are easy to adjust to the different temperatures. And evenings will always be cold, so please be prepared with a warm, winter-weight jacket.
To protect your travel investment, we highly recommend the purchase of travel insurance. Obtaining travel insurance before you leave home is strongly encouraged and very easy. In fact, we work with a great agency in the United States that has helped to make it easy and affordable. This is a great way to protect yourself while visiting Peru.
Andean Land Expeditions is really proud of the work we do for our community. This is a main focus for our company. We have worked with villages directly to help supply them with needs their families were missing. We have supported local schools by giving them computers and books. We currently sponsor a teacher at the village most of our porters come from to ensure their children are offered the best education.
We buy all our food from local farmers and markets and serve the freshest ingredients. We provide English classes for all our team: guides, porters, chefs and drivers. And we are building a house for our porters to give them a safe and comfortable place to stay before and after our treks so they no longer need to sleep on the floor of a friend.
We are always looking to do more for our partners. Please let us know of your ideas and we will work to help.

Your Andean Land Expeditions tour guide will pick you up at your hotel lobby at 8 a.m. They will take you to your first destination, Sacsayhuaman, the most beautiful ruin created by the Incas. Here, you will see a great representation of the Incan architecture that remains so well intact, today. At Sacsayhuaman, you will see the largest stone that survives in any Inca ruin.
From Sacsayhuaman, we will head towards the Sacred Valley. Along the way, we will visit Awanacancha, a weaving center and Andean Land farm. You will observe the differences between llamas, Andean Lands, vicuñas and guanacos, as well as the different varieties of potatoes and corn, that are special to the Sacred Valley. Following, we will drive to the Pisaq Inca Ruins. We will see hundreds of terraces for agriculture, where the Incas farmed corn, potatoes, and quinoa. The religious and astronomical side of the Incas will be visible, at this sight.
